Sweet Cedar (The First Full Moon of Autumn)

At the kitchen window,
dishes in the sink,
this pause has lasted longer than
a space between blinks.
Pleasant recollection
that contemplation’s pulled
from where she’s kept it secreted
in sentiment’s folds.
His playful style,
wry wink and quick grin,
the light his eyes could bring when things
seemed hopelessly dim.

Distracted at the dishes
an evening long ago,
the first full moon of autumn in reach
through the window,
startled, he’s behind her,
magic’ly appeared,
stepped forward in this fullness placed
his breath in her ear.
Feeling him now!
His hand warms her hip!
Immersed, the words within his breathing
make her heart…

Why are you puttin’ ‘way that red dress
with your old clothes?
Layin’ up that red dress
with your old clothes?
That chest is a coffin
once the lid’s closed.

At rest in the cedar,
those memories.
Rest in peace in the cedar,
scented memories,
sweet at your visits
in aged reverie.

Well, I know
I don’t dance that well anymore
and you’re familiar with all of my moves.
Slip on that dress! Thrill me to the core!
Might my imagination improve?

I’ll finish dishes,
clean up this mess.
Can’t you see that I’m anxious
to test my steps?
Let’s go out dancin’.
Slip on that dress!

At the kitchen window,
dishes in the sink,
this pause has lasted longer than
a space between blinks.
Pleasant recollection, but
the water will get cold…
The sweetest breaths of cedar left
in sentiment’s folds…
